Aims

The Summer School, organized in collaboration with the School of Church Communication at the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce, provides students, young screenwriters and producers with an intensive immersion in the practices of writing, developing and evaluating audiovisual projects. Most of the classes will be taught by Bobette Buster, one of America's best-known screenwriting professors and development consultants. The Course is divided into 3 modules, and participants will be able to choose whether to take part in the entire course or in one/two module(s).

Duration and Location

The 50-hour Summer School will take place in July 18-25, 2023 at the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce in Rome (Piazza S. Apollinare, 49), very close to Piazza Navona.
Application deadline: June 26, 2023.

Program

The program is divided into three modules:

• Tuesday, July 18, Wednesday, July 19 and Thursday, July 20 (9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.-7 p.m.)
  The American Way of Storytelling: Hollywood and Independent Cinema (lectures by Bobette Buster).
  First module will have a maximum of 32 participants.
   
• Friday, July 21 (9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.-7 p.m.)
  From True Stories to Films and Tv Series: some European Experiences (Francesco Arlanch, Armando Fumagalli)
  Second module will have a maximum of 70 participants.
   
• Saturday, July 22, Monday, July 24 and Tuesday, July 25 (9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.-5 p.m.)
  The development of projects (workshop led by Bobette Buster on film and TV projects submitted by participants).
  Third module will have a maximum of 12 participants.

Two modes of participation are possible for Workshop 3:

• as authors of treatments that will be evaluated and developed during the workshop. The treatment must be between 20,000 and 30,000 characters, and the script no longer than 120 pages in professional format.
• as non-authors, who will take part in the development of the activities during the three-day workshop.

The treatments and scripts can be submitted in Italian or English.
Authors submitting the treatment/screenplay in Italian must be able to produce an English translation by July 14, in case the project is selected for the workshop.

All seminar activities will be in English.
Thanks to the Master's in International Screenwriting and Production grant, costs are significantly affordable.

Screenwriter
Author –among many others- of the miniseries on John Paul II, St. Augustine, Mary of Nazareth, and Chiara Lubich for RaiUno,  and co-headwriter of the Tv series Blanca and of Doc - Nelle tue mani, one of the biggest successes of Italian TV in the last decades, sold in more than 100 countries.

BOBETTE BUSTER
Script Consultant, Los Angeles
She has worked for Disney and 20th Century Fox and has been a lecturer at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, NorthEastern University, Boston, and Tufts University and at Pixar Animation Studios.

ARMANDO FUMAGALLI
Director of the Master in International Screenwriting and Production at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, script consultant for Lux vide since 1999.
 

Costo

The following participation fees are provided:

Participation in the entire course: €300.00 + VAT for students and professionals; €500.00+ VAT for companies.
Participation in module 1: €100.00 +VAT.
Participation in module 2: €20.00 +VAT.
Participation in module 3: €200.00 +VAT for students and professionals; €400.00 +VAT for companies.

For 2022-2023 students of the Master in International Screenwriting and Production the course will be free of charge.

Certificate

Participants who have attended the Summer School will received a certificate of participation from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, based on the number of modules attended.
