Overview

The film industry is one of the biggest players in the broader entertainment sector and it is considered a cornerstone of this industry.

To be successful in this industry is not just a matter of dreaming, but a matter of passion, talent and hard working. And a matter of education too.

At our Master in International Screenwriting and Production, whose Italian edition has been running since 2000, we have trained young professionals, a relevant number of  which have been highly successful in several areas of this industry and in many countries.

With the same passion for education - and connection with the industry - we have decided to launch in 2016  a more International program focused on Screenwriting and Production, that has gathered brilliant students from more than twenty  countries, so different as United States and Malaysia, Colombia and France, Russia and Lebanon, Spain and China.

This Program is not only addressed to graduates in Film, Communication or Media Studies, but it’s particularly suited to graduates in Literature, Philosophy, Foreign Languages, as well as Law, Business and other related schools.

We believe that in the show business (as in any other business) good ideas are important. But, like Ed Catmull, the visionary head of Pixar Animation Studios, we also believe that ideas are not enough: people --well trained, able to think, to evaluate, to choose and to create-- are even more important for success.

And a product of success, in the entertainment industry, can define who we are, because it defines what we love.

And those who can move the human heart can change the world.

The Master program, taught in English, is designed for both Italian and foreign graduate students with a Bachelor in Literature, Philosophy, Foreign Languages, Media studies and Communication (preferable). Candidates with a different educational background can be admitted to MISP after being evaluated by the program’s scientific committee.

The bachelor degree must be obtained before the beginning of the program.
Exceptionally, candidates coming from Italian universities who have finished their exams and have only to discuss  their final dissertation can be admitted, but if they do not obtain the degree at the end of the academic year 2023-2024, their enrolment in the Master Program will not be confirmed and it will be cancelled.

Students must be able to excel in courses that are reading-and-writing intensive.

For applicants coming from Italian universities, official English proficiency certificates are not required. Applicants are required to demonstrate a good command of the English language during the selection interview.

For applicants coming from foreign universities, official English proficiency certificates that are required are indicated here.

Graduates from the MISP are exposed to a wide range of career opportunities. They have both the theoretical knowledge and the methodological tools suited to pursue professional and managerial careers as:

  • Screenwriters or creative producers of television series and feature films
  • Authors of TV entertainment programs and documentaries, copywriters, creators of video games and webseries, writers of comic books and novels and fiction editors in publishing companies
  • Story editors and script consultants
  • Supervisors of evaluation, acquisition and programming of TV shows and TV series
  • Professionals working in the different areas of the television and film industry (physical production, distribution, acquisition, product placement, talent agencies, etc.)
Reasons to choose MISP
  • It goes deep into understanding the structure of story: how to connect with an audience and move their heart. This is a crucial skill that you can apply to many different media and narrative forms: from feature films to comic books, from sit-coms to novels. And it is an invaluable tool in many different professions.
  • The extremely high rating of professional success of its alumni, that work as writers, creative producers, story editors, novelists, etc. in many many different companies, and also as freelance.
  • The top quality of its instructors: in MISP Faculty there are some of world renown best teachers in Screenwriting, and high ranking and very successful professionals, especially from US, Italy and Uk.
  • The International experience: both for Italians and for students who come from other countries, the mix of backgrounds and cultures that the Internationality of the students brings is a great enrichment of the Program, and opens your mind to see things with a wider angle.
  • The dedication of the mentors and the teachers of the program: the approach is personal and you will receive personal feedback on your skills and attitudes many times during the course, both from instructors and mentors.

Structure and Program

MISP will start on September 24th, 2024 (for foreign students) and on October 8th, 2024 (for Italian students). Classes will end by May 2025.

The graduation day will be at the end of November 2025.

A break of 3 weeks will be scheduled during Christmas time.

Classes will take place four days a week (Tuesday to Friday) from 10.00 to 17.30 in the Milan Campus of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.
Attendance is mandatory. In order to graduate, a minimum of 90% attendance is required.

At the end of MISP, students will be issued the diploma of Master Universitario di I Livello (60 CFU) in International Screenwriting and Production.

Five disciplines will be subject of a specific exam at the end of the classes (around June 2025). The credits will be acquired according to the following exams:

Screenwriting theory - 8 CFU

Script analysis and project evaluation - 8 CFU

Communication ethics - 4 CFU

Writing techniques for audiovisual products - 12 CFU

  • Screenwriting practice: treatments, scenes and dialogues, scripts, pitches.
  • The writing of genres and adaptation.
  • Writing for different formats: comic books, novels, documentaries, entertainment TV shows, advertising, the web, mobile media, transmedia projects.
  • Screenwriting and production of animation projects.

The audiovisual industry - 4 CFU

  • Industries and audiences.
  • TV acquisition and programming and film distribution.
  • The physical production: pre-production, shooting, post-production, contracts and budgeting.

Some students will also have the possibility of attending some specific collateral seminars:

  • Cinema distribution (Disney Theatrical Distribution Italy)
  • Writing TV sit-com (Renata Avidano and Maurizio Sangalli)
  • Writing comics (Silvia Martinoli, Disney)
  • Writing the Musical (Philip LaZebnnk, Pippa Cleary, Ronald Kruschak)
Internship and Final project

Three months before the end of classes, participants in the MISP will choose one of the two following career tracks: screenwriting or production, and invest their time after the end of the classes on their final project or on their internship.

MISP students who choose the screenwriting career will present a script for a feature film or a TV pilot, which can be either an original idea or an adaptation. This script can be written in English, Italian, French or Spanish.
MISP students who will choose the production track will undertake an internship on a film/TV series shooting (or also, if possible, within an established production or distribution company, a TV network or an advertising agency).

For foreign students who do not speak Italian, it can be difficult/impossible to begin an internship for the production track in Italy: in this case either they have to find and internship in their own country or they have to choose the writing track, and deliver a script as their final work.

For a good number of the students who will choose the screenwriting path, at the end of their final projects there will also be the possibility of doing an internship in some production company or network or writers room. This internship cannot be guaranteed in advance for everyone, as it will always depend on the acceptance of the candidate by the employer.

The Master in International Screenwriting and Production is part of a unique network of top companies and professionals of  the entertainment industry  in Italy and  also in USA, in UK and in other European countries.
